Good things started happening the day Eddie noticed me checking him out.

It was the sort of thing that could get a dude killed under different circumstances. But the results in this case were much happier.

Eddie and I were both old school. He played basketball. I played soccer. In Southern California, the high schools play both of those sports in the winter. So the jocks sort of split up by height into one sport or the other. Anyway, we were old school. We both worked our asses off in the weight room and in practice. We both stayed after practice to do extra work.

And that's how it got started. I stayed out on the field one day after practice, juggling the soccer ball, until it was too dark to see on the short, winter day. I pulled my sweatshirt off as I walked into the gym to get to the boys locker room. I heard "Heads up!" as my head popped out of the bottom of the shirt, and I saw a basketball flying straight at my head.

"Fuck!" I shouted and ducked out of the way of the leather missile as it bounced off the door. "Cabron!"
