It came as a real surprise when Paula, the new girl in the office asked me if I wanted to go for a couple drinks and dancing on Saturday night. She only started working in the firm a few weeks ago. Paula was a nice woman, friendly, funny, in great shape, and very pretty. After only a couple weeks she was already quite popular around the office. Especially with the men.

I hadn’t been there much longer myself. In fact, I just moved to San Francisco from Seattle two months ago. I moved here simply because I was made a job offer that I couldn’t refuse. My husband is still living in Seattle and will be there until his company transfers him in a month or so. Since I was feeling kind of lonely, and hadn’t made any real friends yet, I agreed to go out with her.

During my lunch hour, I liked to work out in the firm’s weight room. Occasionally I’d run into Paula down there and we’d work out together. We’d also made the usual friendly small talk at the coffee maker or photocopier. During those chats I found out that we had a lot in common. She’s my age, 32 years old and married with no kids. We both liked to play softball and volleyball and in the summers we both enjoyed mountain biking, swimming, and dancing. Since we had so much in common, I felt a real connection with her and I did consider her a friend.
