Keeping one hand firmly on the wheel, Brian reached across and softly squeezed Sue's hand, attempting to alleviate some of the anxiety that radiated from her tall, slim and athletic body. He smiled lovingly at her, knowing that going to this party was probably going to be a huge mistake but he was reluctant to crush her optimistic hopes for some sort of reconciliation with his friends. He felt sorry for his new girlfriend because Sue knew that many of his friends blamed her for ruining his marriage to Roslyn and that he had not seen any of them since he moved in with her. He knew that Sue was hoping the invitation was a sign that she was going to be given a chance to fit into his circle of friends, but because of his knowledge of how previous parties had ended, he felt his own nervous tension building. He had tried to talk Sue out of accepting the invitation when it had arrived a fortnight ago, but her desire to fit in, perhaps even prove to his friends that she was a better choice than Roslyn ever was, had blinded her to less savoury outcomes. The real irony was that although she was far from blameless, he, not Sue, had been the one to actively pursue the affair.
