EDWIN TAKES A WIFE 17 BY WILL BUSTER

Griffith spent most of that return trip to Irwin's home scouting in front of the newly wedded couple. The youngster knew the woods like the back of his hand and according to his rather rampant speech; he claimed to be able to smell the English at a hundred yards. Whether that was true or not, Irwin and Anne safely traversed the pleasant woodland on that fine June day. They'd taken a little known trail and some six hours after leaving castle Cranwell, they approached Irwin's modest home.

Anne noticed something odd about the area as the tiny trail finally intersected a small road. To her left, just before they turned west on the wagon rutted trail, was a granite ridge. The formation was perhaps twenty to thirty feet high with natural declivities and dense brush near the base. The dense foliage and tall trees at the summit gave the feature an ominous appearance. The wagon track snaked its way through a very narrow defile until at last the steeply rising road brought them to a clearing of well tended fields.

Irwin gave a sigh of relief. "We be near home now. Why don't you carry the boy? I see Griffith has left us for his own home. He's a good lad. He has plenty of spirit."
