EDWIN TAKES A WIFE 18 BY WILL BUSTER

The Welshmen were smart. Silently they waited as Godfrey and two of his officers rode up the steep defile ahead of the slowly advancing footmen. Most of the invading rank and file were dressed in light chain or leather armor although each did carry his shield except for the cross bowmen.

Every defender held his breath with tension as they waited for the infantry to climb towards the top of the narrow pass. Irwin could not believe how these arrogant men strolled up the narrow incline liked they owned it. He tensed at the sturdy wooden lever that held a large rock at just the right point as he waited for the precise moment to send it hurtling into those oncoming ranks.

Sir Godfrey and his officers broke free of the defile. The nobleman laughed and he turned back to yell. "Nobody's here lads! The bloody cowards have fled!"

It was Godfrey's last act in his short and undistinguished career. There was a sharp whistle and the three horsemen were cut down as in a moment from deadly long bow shafts. In the case of Godfrey, the arrow actually slammed through his chain male at the neck. He was dead before he hit the ground. Suddenly boulders toppled into the pass.
