Hugh Blackstone turned out to be a lawyer of some competence in his own right. In addition to this lucrative profession, he retained the added advantage of being a close friend of the Devereau family as he had done some legal work for them and grown up nearby the Devereau estates located a short distance from Chelmsford. The two men had gone to Cambridge together as Sir Robert demanded that his son be proficient in politics and law before embarking on a political career.
