Hard ball By Will Buster

As in all professions and endeavors, there is always a starting point. After four years on the Sudbury high school team and another four years on the Texas A & M university baseball squad, Jerry Hinton was ready for the minors. At least he thought he was ready and apparently the Cleveland Indians did as well.

In college he was a slick fielding second baseman who had power to all fields and sported a snazzy .368 batting average. He could steal second when needed and he was expert at picking up the opposition's signs.

Jerry was a smart cookie with honor grades in business administration to boot. He figured that even if he made it big in the bigs, he'd have to know how to handle his money and what better way than to pick up the knowledge free from the lavish athletic scholarship that had been given to him for his ball yard exploits. When you got right down to it, all he had to do was read his books carefully and pay attention in class. He had no problem cruising along with a 3.5 GPA.

Then he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians. After he'd signed the $500,000 bonus contract, he placed most of the money into a solid monthly income fund and headed south for spring training at the double A level. Life was good and he was still single.
