Chapter 6

Ned showed up bright and early Monday morning. Roger spent quite some time showing him around the stables and determining what he could be doing. The groom, Walter Perkins assured him that Ned would be helpful doing a lot of the small adjustments to equipment that took so much of his time from more important things like exercising the horses. Walter remarked, "This is a God send sir. Ned and I'll get along just fine. He'll give me something to talk about while I'm working around the stables. I'm sure he's got great stories to tell."

Ned chuckled, "I was a first mate I was, and no mistake. I'll help Walter organize things and make sure everything stays neat and tidy. You'll have the best-kept horses in the county. The cottage is just fine sir. It's cozy and nearby to where you want me to work. With the money I'll be earning, I'll buy a small wagon so I can go to town and get the victuals for me and the misses. Sally was getting tired of living in one room all these past six years. She's a seamstress and it's only a mile further for her to go then before. I'm grateful for the work you've given me. Don't you worry sir, Ned Milton doesn't forget a kindness he doesn't."

Roger laughed, "I bet you'd never expected to be working right beside a real sea dog Walter."
