THE CAVE

If you go west from Winston-Salem you'll find a network of well-maintained state roads crisscrossing the countryside. Along one of those roads you'll find twelve farm houses all in a row. My best buddy (Brad Evans) and I (Duncan MacHenry) l have lived there all our lives. Our little community is unusual in that all twelve families living there are farm families who do not live on their farms but chose to make a little settlement of their own. Their farms stretch away toward the north and the men of each family, along with their farm hands who live in adjacent communities, drive to their farms six days a week over dirt country roads.

Another unusual fact about these twelve families is that each of the husbands and wives are graduates of the State College in Raleigh. None of them come from long lines of farmers. All of them majored in Agriculture in college and have chosen to be farmers because that is what they want to do, rather than what their fathers did. Brad and I have just finished our freshmen years at State and are home for the summer holidays. Neither of us think of ourselves as "backwoods red necks" and resent it when we are referred to as such by some of the more snobbish students at State. We each usually help our Dads on their farms during the week while we are on vacation from State, but both of our Dads give us the entire weekend off so that we can goof off or do anything we want to do. ...
