Sergeant William James was in trouble. He, like many others was caught up in the First World War. At this precise moment he was in the middle of no mans land. Like hundreds of others he was slowly walking towards the enemy trench. It was a foggy morning and he could not yet make out the enemy trenches, he preferred it that way. If he couldn't see them then they couldn't see him. He had been in the trenches for six months now and he wanted to die. All his friends who had joined with him were laying in various parts of no mans land feeding the rats. He had become Sergeant when the former Sergeant had taken fifteen bullets in the chest right in front of him. This place was hell on Earth. Through the mist he saw the unmistakable sight of the barbed wire that signified the beginning of the German trenches. Upon the wire he saw many bodies and felt a tear in his eye. What happened next happened extremely fast. A cry from the trench showed the German knew they had company. The noise of men hastily readying their weapons and finally the most hated noise of all. The rattle of machine gun fire. A man to his left went down instantly. Two more followed him. James acted like lightning. The machine gunner was simply going from left to right picking them all off. He lunged at the man to his left and threw them both to the floor. As he did so he felt a searing pain across his back and then everything went black.

He awoke in their trench, barely alive. The Corporal, whose live he had saved in no mans land, was sat next to him. Taking stock of his situation he realised he was in a makeshift stretcher. "Sir I believe ...
