The Last Pharaoh 18 By Will Buster

In those days, Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, made war against Samaria. The Assyrian army was so powerful that after a short campaign they carried the people of Israel into captivity. The wayward children of Samaria had no defense against the chariots and iron weapons of the well organized Assyrian army. The invaders came like an unstoppable plague of locusts. The very streams were dried up from the vast army that drank and tramped its way, ever closer to the imperiled city of David.

Hezekiah was only twenty six and knew to the throne. The young king felt that his reign, such as it was, would be very short as he watched the distant smoke of burning villages ever creeping closer and closer to the Holy city. It was obvious that the Assyrians would not stop until all of Judea was subdued before they would begin their march to Egypt. Weeks before the Assyrian ambassador had told Hezekiah and his counselors that Shalmaneser was incensed with the refusal of Hezekiah to pay tribute to "the great king". With that threat, Hezekiah had ordered crops from all over the area to be brought to Jerusalem for what he knew would be a long siege. He had the gates reinforced to insure that their water supply was protected and any weapons outside the city were quickly brought in as the smoke rose ever closer and closer to the Judean capitol.
