Gage stood back in the far corner of the ballroom and turned his head toward the main entrance when he heard the trumpets sound. It was time for the King and Queen to enter the ballroom. The crowd gathered along the red carpet spread out on the floor and Gage too watched the main entrance in a trance. But he remained watching over the crowd and looked for anyone suspicious who might just cause a little trouble tonight. He had been assigned, along with four other royal head guards, to make sure that everything ran smoothly. This had been the first royal public ball dance in years which the King and Queen had allowed just about anybody to come. It was Princess Caitlin’s 21st birthday party and Gage stood erect, ready for any trouble that might take place.

He stood on the end of a podium to the far right away from the crowd. It wasn’t so high that he stuck out from the rest of the crowd, but it was just enough to see above the rest of the people’s heads. Perfect, he thought. He could see the King and Queen enter. But most of all, he would be able to see Caitlin. The entire night, he had wondered what she would wear. Nothing he would have seen before, of course, because she always wore something new. But he knew she would be beautiful.
