I was 19 when my cousin Sally, who was a year or so younger, rang me out of the blue one spring day to see if I would help her to obtain another credit towards a local community services medal. She was organizing a hike of several days duration through a forest park around a lake several hours drive from where we lived and was planning to do it that summer. I doubted my fitness was up to the task, but I agreed and went along to make up the numbers as I didn't have anything more pressing to do. There had been a certain amount of friction between our parents as we grew up and consequently Sally and I had only really seen each other at Christmas when we were kids and then hardly ever after that. I guess part of my decision to join her was to find out a bit about a branch of the family that I knew very little about.

The planning phase went smoothly enough, except that Sally's boyfriend Nate had to drop out at the last moment. That left Sally, a friend of hers from school called Libby and me. It was a long drive and we camped a night at a campground run by the Forest Service at the start of the track so we could set out in the cool of the next morning. We were a happy band of 3, the two dark-haired girls and me, when we left the car park by the Forest Service Head Quarters, although I was wondering about what I'd let myself in for. Sally and Libby seemed to be from a completely different world.
