Dr Judy Walker stood quietly for a moment, like she did nearly every morning, admiring the front of her new veterinary clinic. The early morning sun sparkled off the fresh paint and the polished brass sign that hung over the door. Her father had made that sign for her in his basement workshop. She wanted to pay him for it, but he kept tearing up the checks. Something about being so very proud of his little daughter.

She didn't feel like a little daughter anymore. In truth, she was hoping every day to feel like a competent grownup. She tried very hard to be perfect, for that was how she defined competent, and like most of us, she didn't make it. And since she had chosen a profession where it is often a profound tragedy when you fail, she had plenty of evidence that she was not perfect.

Most of her life plan had come to pass, pretty much on schedule. She had done well in high school, so getting into UCLA wasn't all that difficult. Like many large universities, UCLA rations out the important classes with a lottery, so Judy couldn't always stay on schedule. She took other classes when the ones she needed were filled, and thus spent a little extra time to finish her degree, but the straight A's came and the professors were impressed, and so her applications to the veterinary colleges looked good.
