I was watching the local news last weekend, and the host was interviewing the president of a local chapter of a national organization that fund-raises for a medical group. In the interview, the interviewee was talking about a lack of volunteers for their upcoming fund-raising drive. All they were looking for were people who would come into the office for the morning or afternoon and help stuff, label, and seal envelopes. Being retired and a believer in the organization, I decided to give them a call to see if they wanted my help. The told me to come in on Monday morning so we could meet each other.

On Monday morning, I went to the office and met the executive director, a lady about 45 years old. We talked about what needed to be done and how much time I could devote. Right then and there, I decided I would go in every morning for one week and help them out. She took me to their work room and introduced me to Muriel who was sitting at a table putting cards in an envelope. I asked her where all the volunteers were and she said, "We're it, Honey, unless someone else comes along. Want a job?"

I said that I would stay for one week and help out. She was glad about this because she felt she would never meet her deadline otherwise. I sat down beside her, and she explained what we had to do.
