My wife Karen and I were tripping interstate for a short holiday and had stopped at a hotel in a quiet, folksy town. We checked in, unloaded our luggage and strolled along the main street, checking out how things fitted in a place like this. We had been on the road for 3 nights and we intended to take another 4 before heading home.

That night we showered and dressed and headed towards the hotel restaurant which was sited just off to one side past the bar. I normally dress casual when we travel, blue jeans, a knit shirt, etc and Karen keeps things fairly low-key too. But today was my birthday - one of the reasons we were taking a short vacation - so we dressed a little better. I had on slacks and a pressed shirt, Karen had on a favourite red dress, cut low in front and lower in the back. We weren't looking for any action but dressed up a little for the occasion.

The restaurant was pretty standard fare for a mid range hotel. Big enough to seat maybe 100 people on a busy night, tonight was mid-week and there were maybe eight or so groups, couples and foursomes, in the room. We took a booth off to one side and were served by a young waitress who was efficient without being stylish. We both ordered drinks and then dinner. A plate of dips and breads for a shared entrée, Karen ordered a Greek salad with chicken strips, I chose a baked whole trout with vegetables.
