Chapter 3

Even though it was a little out of fashion, Edward grew back a full beard and it made him look a few ears older. That and his somber clothing and serious bearing helped until he reached his forties. Again he heard the occasional comment about how well preserved he was and he knew it was nearly time to make another sudden and permanent disappearance. Yet the parting would be so painful. Even though Kate loved him far more than he loved her, yet the idea of such abandonment was repulsive to Edward. Then there were the trusting children who reminded him of Tom. Each day went by and he tried to delay the inevitable. He wanted to stay but what would people say when his wife began to look like his mother? It was August 1639 and there was unease in the land as the Puritans and the old Catholics seemed to be drawing further apart with the Church of England uncomfortably in the middle trying to keep the country from splitting into conflict. Of the original partners, only the venerable mister Smith was still alive and of course Edward was a senior partner now. He'd been offered a judgeship that he had diplomatically declined and he'd continued to be the bane of opposing lawyers. To be sure many of his colleagues admired his skills but there were those who disliked him and even hated him.
