Chapter 10

U.N.S.S. Hydra continued on the curved path away from the sun as it gradually closed the vast distance to the red planet. As time went on, Kal eventually convinced Nika to give him the guided tour through the ship, one evening when many of the staff went off duty. Third shift like on Earth was down time for most. He was particularly impressed by the bridge with its vast array of communication equipment. The on board computer had artificial intelligence. It was affectionately named, Alfred, among other things. This particular computer had an extremely condescending, sarcastic way of addressing the moronic humans whose attending activities it tolerated with long suffering impatience.

Nika whispered in Kal's ear, barely able to smother a mischievous smirk. "Go on, Kal test him."

Kal noticed her tight lipped grin and the twinkle in her lovely eyes and he wondered if he was getting set up, but like a good sport, he bit the bait. "Good evening Alfred. How many more million miles do we have to go before we reach our orbital position around Mars?"

There was an audible sigh, "God give me patience. I guess it was an optimistically vain hope a senior officer could figure that out. Oh ...
