Chapter 12

Kal, jack and Allan were on the shuttle along with several other passengers ready to start the last leg of their journey to the red planet. For months they'd been anticipating this moment and now, they were about to descend to that world of desolation and mystery. Jack insisted on carrying the little black box as he called it while Allan kept a sharp eye. The front of the shuttle had a view screen and they all watched, as the small craft started moving towards the surface. At first the motion was minimal but as the planet began to fill the screen they could see mountain ranges and wispy dust storms. They coasted effortlessly through the thin Martian atmosphere, seemingly proceeding at a faster and faster rate of speed. In fact they were slowing down as they entered the atmosphere but it seemed they were increasing velocity as the features swept by. Down they went, until they finally leveled off at about fifteen thousand feet. The operator mentioned that they would be at the base in fifteen minutes as they were being electronically guided to the precise location. Kal murmured to Jack, "That's as well Jack. It's like a big red ocean down there with no landmarks at all except for that huge valley over there." As if the operator was reading his thoughts he announced to the passengers, "That's the Mariner Rift just below you and to your right. It's my understanding that they've only explored a small portion of it to date. ...
