Gradually Edward liquidated his holdings. The last thing he sold was the town home. He took lodgings at a good quality rooming home and paid the landlady for a full year in advance pretending to be an old frail man who had seen better days. He even sold his expensive clothing and purchased lower middle class garments to play the part. This was after his final trip to Manchester as Mister Spencer and the trust account had grown to an immense fortune of approximately seventy five thousand pounds. His London account for Edward Spencer only held a modest thousand pounds as he marked time until he withdrew the last of his funds in January 1825.

With great relief, he finally was able to get rid of the out of fashion wig. He thoroughly cleansed his face and it was once again the face of a man in his mid twenties. He bought three suits of the most up to date clothing in bright colors. They were the kind of clothes a young man would wear. He wrote himself a letter from Edward Spencer verifying his identity and traveled to Manchester in a fine coach. Upon arriving at the law office of Mister Graham he made his entrance.
