This happened several years ago, while I was still living in Washington State. I had just gotten a second story apartment in Mountlake Terrace at 44th and 209th Street. It was really my first place of my own, as I had always lived with someone in the past and I was now newly divorced.

The North side faced the parking lot and was the patio side with a large glass sliding door that looked into my kitchen/ dining area and a large glass window that looked into my living room. On the West side was another large window into my living room, my front door, the master bath window, and two of my bedroom windows. On the South was another window in my room, and two windows in my son's room. The West and South sides faced the other apartment buildings. There was maybe fifteen feet between my building and the next one, with a walking path between. The fourth side was a shared wall with the unit next door, so I had no windows there but we did share the balcony where our patios were.

My son was in Greece with his Grandma all summer, so I was all alone for my first few months there, and when he got back he stayed with his dad most of the time, leaving me free to play a lot with the opposite sex.

I moved into the apartment during the Memorial Day weekend, so it was really hot. Being hot, I left all my windows during the summer months. It was safe enough since I was upstairs. No one could get in without ...
