Chapter 18

Weeks went by and the drudgery of pointless mapping continued for Kal and Nika. They collected occasional rock samples, used electronic equipment to map precise formations and measurements of the rift and every two miles placed a mileage pole to mark the furthest progress of the mapping and exploration expedition. The going was slow, as the Colonel demanded very thorough charting and investigation. Any unusual feature had to be examined. Any small cave entrance had to be checked for signs of water or signs of life. On the few occasions they found a crevice or small opening in the rock walls it was as dead as the rest of the rust red world.

Yet there progress was quite good compared with what previous exploratory ventures had completed. The first two weeks they'd charted thirty-two miles and that was well above what other teams accomplished. The second two-week stint saw them chart thirty-four miles with the same lack luster results. They always reported their unremarkable findings to Captain Herrick when they got back to base.

Jack and Al complained that Kal was making them look bad but the truth of the matter was that Nika had experience in this sort of exploration and they worked very well as a team in more ways then one. They even ...
