We'd known each other for quite awhile, interacting in a work environment for about 15 years or so. During that time, it had become obvious to everyone, even us, that there was something between us. A tension existed that was charged and sexual in nature. Whenever it got too charged, however, one of us would back off. The result was a situation of friendship, deep and long-standing, but with a hint of mystery and wonder. Could there have ever been anything romantic or sexual between us? Could we have made good lovers for each other? I had resigned myself to never finding out the answers.

The last few days have heightened those tensions. Our contacts have been brief, usually only a few minutes each day, as I arrive for work and she prepares to leave. Is this light form of intimacy and its acceptance and response a gentile message? Is she telling me that, if I make a move, she is available? Our friendship is strong and long lasting, and I would hate to ruin it by a rash, miscalculated and unwanted advance. Am I being too cautious and cowardly? Or am I being smart and prudent? Not knowing her mind and not knowing how open and willing she is truly feeling makes it hard to find an answer. After all, in the past, my moves have been rebuffed. Her loss of a lover has long haunted her and, I think, crippled her emotionally. ...
