Sergio's Catch

No place on earth was more beautiful to young Sergio than the Sea of Cortez. Out on the blue water, wearing nothing but cut off jeans, life was good. The work was hard but gave him a nice chiseled shape the ladies loved. And now, finally, after years of working on other mens' boats, he had a fishing craft of his own. A beat up old thing, yes, but it was his and it was a start. At last he had his own business, and he needed to make the endeavor work. Thus far, however, it was slow going. His nets were coming back sparsely littered with fish and as the late afternoon sun began to sink on an another day he was starting to get discouraged.

Sergio raised the net before heading back in and it was heavier than normal, perhaps at last he'd have something. Once it was on his boat, he couldn't believe his eyes. In the net, struggling, was a woman. No, not a woman, it was a mermaid. Deep red hair and skin of alabaster. The tail began just under her navel, skin gradually giving way to silvery scales and on down to a horizontal fin like that of a whale or dolphin. He couldn't believe his eyes and was filled with both fear and wonder. What the hell was he going to do with this creature?

"Please let me go," said a voice. It was soft, sweet. But he was looking at the mermaid and her mouth never moved. "Please, surface dweller, allow me to return to the sea." ...
