I knew I was still alive by the steady beeping of the heart monitor. I was paralyzed and unable to even open my eighty-seven year old eyes. Maybe I was unconscious or semi-conscious, but I knew instinctively that the end was coming soon. The world seemed to be drifting away from me.

I knew I was dying. My children had gathered around. I heard the doctor explain to them that it was my time. Gradually, the voices faded and only the sound of the heart monitor penetrated my fading consciousness of the world outside myself.

I considered this time a blessing. It was a time to review my life, my experiences, my relationships, my choices, and yes, my regrets. I guess my life had been typical of women of my generation. I grew up in a traditional home and instilled with the values of home and family. My role as daughter, then wife, then mother had been laid out for me and I never questioned it. I guess I was happy enough, I'd raised three wonderful kids and was married to a wonderful loving man who provided for us and loved us all until his death three years ago.
