The duplex had been vacant for almost 5 weeks. John and Harriet were in their early 80's and the upkeep of the building was simply too much, so they decided to rent out their half and move to an assisted care facility. I had been living in the second half and taking care of both units for almost 10 years now. They were great landlords. They paid me adequately for the work I did in maintaining their building. I had taken the last three weeks off from my writing to get their place ready for renting. I needed the break and I liked the work. Seven years earlier I had put in a hot tub and surrounding deck. Four years ago I had replaced the privacy fence. Last summer I replaced the roof and repainted the outside. I knew every square inch of the structure.
