TWO DAYS LATER

Peter wondered where he was as he woke up.

A hotel room definitely. The curtains were closed but there was bright sunlight around the edges. That fact, and the message from his bladder, told him he had been asleep for more than eight hours. The bathroom was easy to find.

Belgium? The Netherlands? Luxembourg? He was still fuzzy, although he had the best sleep he'd had for weeks. Promoters for rock bands need strong bladders and the ability to go without sleep for long periods.

He peeked through the curtains. Small streets, people on bicycles. Definitely the Netherlands. There was a coffee maker in the room so he put the packet in and turned it on. The television seemed to have mostly Dutch channels; his Dutch was passable, but then he found CNN. Nothing about a rock band being arrested for doing something un-natural in Rotterdam. That was good.

He reflected that the promoter is the one who works the longest, arriving at the venue early, even before the roadies, making sure everything is right, and then after the show making sure the roadies tear down properly and settling up the bills with the venue owner. Getting to bed by 4 a.m. was lucky. ...
