THE LIBRARY

It began, oddly enough, at the public library. They had just installed a new computerized card catalog system, and the response time was so slow you could walk outside and smoke a cigarette before it displayed the list of books. In desperation, I began walking along the shelves, reading the category labels stuck on the sides - it was much faster!

I was looking for books on fashion, with the intention of sprucing up my rather drab wardrobe, when I passed the 300 section. The shelf was labelled, plainly and simply, Sexuality. I walked on, but my mind kept drifting back; what, exactly, would the library have in that category? I finally found what I was looking for and picked out a few books, but my curiosity impelled me to return to the intriguing section and thumb through a few books. There was Masters and Johnson, Freud and several other authors I'd never heard of. Looking around guiltily, I grabbed a few at random and headed for the checkout desk.

A woman about my age sat behind it, and I blushed as she ran the scanner over the bar-coded labels, but she just smiled professionally and didn't ask what a forty-five year old woman was doing checking out books about that taboo subject. The parking meter still had some time left on it when I reached my car, and I couldn't restrain my curiosity any longer - I picked up a book called Sexual Landscapes and scanned the table of contents.
