Trying to control her trembling, Laura knocked on Mr. Edwards' door.

"Come in."

Laura pushed the heavy oak door open, stepped inside and let it close behind her. It was 5:30, the end of the day, most of the office already gone. Standing just inside the large office, fifteen feet of open space between her and Mr. Edwards' desk, she felt tremendously small. Stand tall, she had told herself before coming. Shoulders up, eyes up, loud voice. Be confident. Be strong.

Yeah right.

She didn't want to start crying right here and now, but it wasn't far beneath the surface. Mr. Edwards was finishing something on his desk, and had not yet looked to meet her eyes. She wondered why bosses always did this. Was it just to tilt the balance of power in their favor, psychological leverage, to show clearly that the meeting will start when they, and only they, want? If intimidation was the point, it was working.

Laura only stood and waited, her hands clasped together in front of her, trying to breathe calmly, trying not to think about all the implications of this meeting, but it was impossible not to. She had worked for the company for six years, and Mr. Edwards had been the boss ...
