A week after we got married I was in class learning to be a truck driver. That was part of the deal when Gus and I got hitched - I was gonna be his co-driver. Sounded good to me. I'd never thought of being a truck stop waitress as a career. I should say it sounded good except for that going to school part. Did I really need classes. I knew what most of those knobs and buttons in a truck were for. 'Course the only knobs I'd ever actually used were connected to the driver, but it's almost the same.

Gus and I were staying at a motel in Omaha while I went to class. He was taking a couple of weeks off and we had planned it as part of our honeymoon, but I was too worried to really look forward to it. I've never been a good student. I tried college, or at least a juco, but couldn't cut it. Probably because I spent more time blowing the football team than I did studying. In any event, I was worried if I could get through the classroom part of my training. I knew once I got on the road with Gus as my mentor I'd be just fine. But then on the first day of class I got good news.

The previous June I'd spent a night with a driver named Sandy. He usually came into the truck stop where I worked with his wife Lil, but she was taking some training at the time and he was driving solo. They always seemed like a devoted couple. Lil had even confided to me that Sandy was "the best pussy eater ever."
