It was a month before the end of my senior year and my mom had just gotten married again to Sam Harris. He was a good man; a damn site better then cavalcade of losers Mom dated before him. Sam had a daughter, Kris, whom I went to high school with. We didn't hang out together much. Not that I didn't care for her, it was just that we traveled in different circles.

I was your typical friendly guy. I didn't get into trouble. I was fairly good at sports. I got decent grades. I was a decent piano player. I wanted to be a sportscaster for a MLB team.

Kris was different than the girls I dated or hung around with. She was an artistic, coffeehouse type of person, always reading poetry and having deep, intellectual conversations. I found it mysterious and attractive, but I thought it was a bit intimidating at times.

The two of us started spending more time together during our senior year, when it looked like our parents were getting heavily involved. Once they announced they were getting married, Kris & I found that it was a little strange going to school and seeing your "sibling" around.
