After two weeks of census training, I was finally out in the field. I had comfortable shoes just like they said, and I had a week's supply of polo shirts plus a spare so I'd look "professional." It turns out they weren't actually asking people for the information about their households yet; they were just making sure their address lists were right. After a few weeks of this, I'd developed a nice tan, and I think I'd even lost some weight, which was well worth the cost of replacing tennis shoes.

I also developed a little game I played, mostly when I did apartment buildings. They usually had all the mailboxes in one place, and I just had to read down the rows and match them up with my list. While this was going on, sometimes I could hear the TV in one of the apartments right by the mailboxes, and I'd try to guess what they were watching. I recognized Judge Judy and Regis Philbin by their voices alone, but I could only get the soap operas if I paid attention to the time.
