The Things That Happen at Flight School! This is another series of true stories from my life as a pilot.

I am Mark Johnstone. Some will remember me from the "Basement" series. After I left the Navy as a pilot I went on to get my 1500 hours of flying time to qualify for the ATP (Airline Transport Pilot) license. To date I've amassed nearly 40,000 hours in the air, counting Viet Nam, of course. I've lived in a suburb of Atlanta and still fly for a major airline. In my free time I am a certified FAA instructor, teaching the fine art of flying to both young and old alike. I am part of a flying club which owns five aircraft from a Cessna 172 to a Beechcraft King Air. We work out of DeKalb-Peachtree airport in Atlanta. Not only do I teach flying but also ground school. Our group has anywhere from 5-12 student pilots who want to enter a career in aviation or who want to get licensed before they join the Air Force or Navy seeking to be part of the air corps of these branches of the military.

In the spring of 1990 I began a new class of beginners, all young men and women in their early 20's. They were eager to learn to fly and reminded me of a younger version of me. They had the mental capabilities to be quick learners as well as a bit of maturity to handle all aspects of what was expected of people who were studying to become pilots.
