I've done a number of memorable road trips in my lifetime so far, there is something so appealing to jumping into a car, listening to your favourite bands while escaping into unseen landscapes. Not knowing what you will find is part of the excitement that I get.

One of those pleasures occurred when I lived in South Africa, I worked for a national park in the north western cape. The park is so remote that to get to the nearest town for the nearest semblance of civilization is a 4-5 hour drive. We took it in turns amongst the team to visit the town and stock up on our weekly goods, and this time it was mine.

Setting off through the park in the early hours of the morning as the sun starts to appear through the mist has a tranquil elegance that makes up for the lack of sleep I've lost to do this trip.

The first hour is through a sandy potholed nightmare of a road that rocks and shakes me leaves me wondering when my next dentist appointment is but is soon forgotten as I hit the smooth tarmac the window open, the breeze on my face and an open road.
