Male Bonding Weekend...that's what Scott called it. We were all high school buddies who had all gone our separate ways. Now, 15 years on, and the Henry David Thoreau quote rang in my mind. "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." Many people don't know the second half of that quote: "What is called resignation is confirmed desperation."

We were all getting along with our careers. The six of us had perfect wives and 2.3 perfect children with perfect teeth all living in a perfect home with a perfect lawn. Well, except Jason. He had divorced the perfect wife and was about to make a damn fool of himself with a woman 11 years younger than him with an insatiable sex drive. Come to think of it, maybe he wasn't so foolish. Or desperate.

Scott's idea of "Male Bonding Weekend" sounded pretty good to me...camping, 4x4 jeeps on the sand dunes and getting away from it all. Each of us was to bring two cases of beer and $500 for food, dune buggies and poker. Scott took care of the rest.

The dune season ends the first week of October. The crowds were gone, and the maples had already taken on a reddish glow brought on by the cooling evenings. The famous sand dunes are nestled between Lake Michigan and a shallow Silver Lake, with the campground just beyond.
