When Christine died quiet unexpectedly nearly two years ago, I was lost. We had always been there for one another even if we were separated. I nearly lost my mind and probably would have if it were not for the kindness shown by old friends.

It was about 6 weeks after the funeral when I received an invitation for dinner from a couple I had know for nearly my entire life. Jim and Rose had been friends of mine in high school, Jim and I went through Army basic training together and I worked for him part time when he opened his service station in the 70's. Jim was the one who made the call asking me to come to dinner.

"Rose and I would like to have you over for dinner. You have been sitting at home way too long. Please join us." We made plans for that coming Friday evening. We were going to have dinner and then maybe slip out to a bar near their home for a drink or two. Rose new the band that was playing there and wanted to go listen for a while.

Dinner was comfortable. They allowed me to vent about my feelings of loss and prodded me just enough to keep me talking. After a couple bottles of wine, we were starting to loosen up and thought that the walk to the bar might just be the ticket. It was a cool winter evening so Rose wanted to walk between us.
