Frank breathed a sigh of relief as he opened the door to the Paris hotel suite he had rented for him and his new bride. He could not believe he was now a married man, married to his unlikely bride, a blond, blue-eyed Russian beauty named Olga. For over a year, the Russian refugee had served as his interpreter in Bavaria, where Frank was a US Army captain assisting with the postwar military governance.During the war, Frank had been a young paratroop lieutenant, serving in the famed 101st Airborne Division. He had fought in Normandy, in Holland, and during the Battle of the Bulge, then during the initial advance into Germany. Once the hostilities ceased, Frank had expected to be sent back home to his native Los Angeles, but was informed he would have to assist with the postwar military government of the American zone in Germany.
Frank's thoughts wandered to the day he had first met Olga. It was during the waning days of the war, when his patrol had found a small labor camp near Munich, housing mostly female prisoners. Not being a German language speaker, Frank had desperately called out in English for anyone who can help him. Olga courageously identified herself. She spoke English quite well, since, as she later explained, she had studied the language at a high-school in Leningrad. With her help, Frank's patrol was able to learn the basic information about the camp, which Frank promptly relayed to his higher headquarters.
