The house was in darkness when Jerry unlocked the door and stepped inside. It was a little after 10PM but certainly not unusual because it had always been this way. MJ worked almost every weekend since she took him in a little over seven years ago.

MJ - or Auntie Marg as his mom had told him to call her years ago, was not really a relative but as close as you could get without being blood. She had been his mother's best friend for as long as he could remember. She had been thirty-three years of age when his parents and younger sister had been killed in a car crash. Jerry had been fourteen and it only seemed natural when she took him under her wing and had him move in with her. That was the one big problem when only children marry each other - no extended families to fall back on.

MJ's apartment had been small so it was a big help when all the legal shenanigans over the estate had been concluded, they were able to move back into Jerry's family home. Thanks to his father's position and foresight not to mention his parents' life insurance, there would be a generous monthly allowance for Jerry, with a hefty payment at eighteen and the final disbursement when he turned twenty-one. It had proved a blessing for MJ as well. Not having to pay an outlandish rent was a plus, as was the proximity to the hospital where she worked as an ER nurse.
