WE MET IN THE PARK

I was filled with gloom and trepidation at what the afternoon would bring. That was strange really, since I was sitting in a park on a lovely summer's day.

The problem was that I was attending a picnic hosted by my husband's company, and my presence was required of course, or questions would be asked about my absence. It was a chore really, but it had to be done in support of my husband.

I only knew the few couples that had been to our home or that I had met at Christmas parties, so most of these folks were strangers to me. That meant either being ignored or having to indulge in meaningless chat.

Many couples were entering the park and children and a few pets were running around. The fire was already going in the barbecue. I was subjected to the usual countless introductions, with endless names I would never remember. As the hamburgers and hot dogs were put on the grill, a few beer cans appeared from coolers.

As the food was cooking, my husband and I went from group to group meeting more endless families of the people who worked with him. As the food disappeared, people bustled around as the volley ball and ...
