2 Ghost Story

Roland felt almost human next morning. He was still drained but at least his head wasn't aching and firmness had returned to his step. However when he reached the tap room, Meg was there already. Obviously she'd gotten up early and prepared him breakfast. It wasn't all that much. Some gritty looking porridge and a large slice of black bread was all that she placed in front of him. Well, he'd had worse and besides, he hadn't expected the kindness. "Why thank you. I don't even know your name." He'd been quite groggy the night before and had forgotten it.

"My name is Meg. I thought the least I could do was make you a meal after your rescue last evening."

He picked up the bread and started nibbling. "Think nothing of it lass. Any gentleman would have done the same."

Meg laughed without mirth. "Then you must know a different breed of gentlemen than the ones around here! That pig, Walter Fitzherbert is the worst of the lot."

"Who is he?" The bread was actually quite good. She'd put some kind of spice or herb in it.

Meg grimaced. "He's the one you hit first. I think you broke his nose. ...
