The room is dark and quiet. Day left on schedule, but I didn't bother to turn on the lamp next to my chair when night arrived. The only light is the flickering of the TV, and Clint Eastwood is shooting the bad guys in silence, because the volume is turned down. Only a swallow or two remains in my glass, but the Jack Daniels bottle waits within reach if I need reinforcements. It isn't near as full as when this evening started. I'm alone again, and I'm thinking. Jack helps.

Sixty years old. High blood pressure and cholesterol. A bit thick around the middle, and the legs aren't what they used to be. Hell, nothing is quite what it used to be. Friends my age are already starting to drop dead around me. I'm thinking about mortality, and about all that led up to this time. And I'm trying to come to grips with my past, some things that I did right, and then all that other.

I found the photo buried deep in the junk drawer. Dick and Jane and Spot. Lordy, did that bring back memories......

To say we grew up together is to understate things. All three of us were born within a month of each other. Our mothers were friends, and they lived walking distance apart, so when they got together, which happened almost every afternoon, the three of us came along. The photo captured a typical scene. Dick and Jane and Spot, the three of us in the playpen together, in diapers. Lots of similar photos were taken, all with the three of us together. We played together, took our naps ...
