Chapter 17 Resolution

The pre dawn light shimmered like some unearthly shroud over the limitless ocean of desert. Roland felt like he was floating along in the midst of the army of crusaders. They were riding straight towards the impending dawn. There were no sounds, just the steady approach of day. Then as if by magic, the ground in front of them was suddenly filled with a screaming horde of Saracen warriors as they rode towards them with the sudden glare of the sun behind them as it broke over the horizon. Arrows filled the air. Yells and screams drowned out all other possible noise. The horde drove through the ranks of the crusaders like a hot knife through melting butter. He saw a curved sword plummet towards his head and suddenly all was black.

"Wake, my heart! Awake!"

Roland shook his head with surprise. He was in his bed and Meg was trying to comfort him with her naked warmth. "What?"

Meg held him close. "You were having a nightmare. You were yelling commands as if you were in battle."

He shuddered. "I was. It was back in the Holy land. Our army was being crushed by the infidels. It was horrible."
