"Oh Fuck!" Helen looked at the monitors with disbelief as flight after flight to England was cancelled in seconds. She was meant to be home this evening to meet Simon's parents, her future in-laws, for dinner. Then there was a low groan around the airport as hundreds of travellers realised what was happening and moved towards the airline ticket desks.
Helen was travelling light so she was well up the queue to re-book, but it quickly became clear from the faces of the people as they left the desk that no one was going to flying anytime soon. She recognised a middle-aged English couple from the flight out and asked, "Excuse me, do you know what's wrong with the flights?" Her first instinct was a terrorist incident, but Helen would never have guessed the answer.
"Some bloody volcano in Iceland has sent up a cloud of ash and all flights to England are cancelled," the man replied, "I mean, really, what kind of idiot would stop flights because of ash." His wife added, "If you need to get home quickly you would be better getting a train to Paris or Brussels and then Eurostar, but you had better be quick. If this continues for long no one will be going anywhere." And with that they hurried off out of the airport. ...
