Tar de' Bern watched as the woman was wheeled in through the gates. He wondered what Jo' Abi had paid for her. She would be beautiful. The prize usually was and this year he had heard that she was extra special. Tar had not been in the capital for twenty years. He had visited as a youth for a brief period but had not been back until now. The wars in the north where his dukedom lay were finally over. They had kept him very busy until now. The new ruler had brought with him his newly trained elite troops and they had together defeated their northern enemies. They had conquered deep into their northern neighbor. Truth be told, the new ruler's ruthless and brilliant tactics had as much to do with the victory as his elite troops. He was a man to be reckoned with. Tar had come to the capital as much to pay his homage to this man as to holiday. He looked up to where the throne had been placed. It was only a few seats away and empty. He wondered where the ruler was. Rumour was that he was still fighting in the north but Tar knew that this was not the case. It was intriguing.

Tar's gaze returned to the slave. The wagon was being pulled around the arena as close to the seated crowd as possible. The raised dais on which the woman sat put her at about the same level as the front row of seats of the arena. He was 5 rows up and would have a very good view of her as she was presented to the nobility. The chancellor would officiate in the absence of the ruler to inspect and judge her worthiness.
