True to the office speculation, a large manila envelope was sitting on my desk Monday morning. Inside was a carefully worded letter explaining the restructuring of the company, how my services would no longer be required and an outline of their financial payout. I sat down and tossed the letter and envelope across my desk. Glancing over, I saw Pete's desk was bare and cursed. I knew it was bound to happen but my mind was whirling. No job, no prospects, a few bucks in savings but after that, I was screwed.

"So you got yours huh?" Pete set a coffee down in front of me.

"Yep." I tried to smile but couldn't.

"At least they gave you the weekend." He reached into his sport-coat pocket and pulled out a fifth of scotch. I stared with my mouth open.

"They couriered mine to the house on Saturday morning." He poured a healthy amount into his coffee. "Jenny went fucking nuts."

"I thought you'd be safe for sure." I felt bad for Pete. He was a young guy and he was smart, just not a go-getter. His wife, Jenny, was a proper bitch. No class at all and it showed when she tore Pete a new one at the company picnic a few months ago. It hadn't been until I walked past her and quietly told her that corporations remember shit like that did she have enough sense to just shut up and walk away. ...
