REVEREND JOAN'S TRAVELING CHURCH OF LOVE read the sign above the door to the backroom of the small bookstore. I stuck a $20 bill into a box labeled "Offerings" and went inside.

The room was small, and there weren't many people—six guys, all around my age, and four girls, sitting on metal folding chairs facing a sort of stage that was really a mattress with black silk sheets. I recognized two of the guys from my college classes. But we didn't say hi. Everyone seemed faintly embarrassed being here. Expecting some kind of trick.

I took a chair right in front of the mattress. It was the only open seat left, but mostly I wanted to get a good look at Reverend Joan. To see if she was really her.

In a moment the overhead fluorescent lights went off, leaving only candles on shelves. A door in the rear opened, and a woman came out and stood in front of the mattress.

It was Joan.

She wore a minister's robe, but her feet were bare. She smiled at the group, and then she noticed me. Her smile got a little wider, and she nodded. Then she looked out around the room.
