I started my coaching career over a decade ago, but it was my third team that is still my favorite. Coaching at a small school, our expectations were never very good, but this class had a few outstanding athletes. I spent most of my time with three in particular, Erin Cole, Jamie Chatsworth, and Lynn Creek. Each one of these girls could have played in college if they had wanted to, but only Lynn took the work seriously. When she started with me in high school, her footwork was not very good, she was a little big around, but she had the determination, intelligence, and raw skills necessary to be an incredible middle hitter in volleyball. I am not your typical volleyball coach, and I never played the game, but I was an experienced coach and capable of teaching the components of the game needed to succeed at a high level.

Her parents had split long before we ever met. Her father remarried and did not spend as much time with her as he could have because of the new wife and kid at home. Her mother started to date again as well, but never seemed able to find the right guy. Because of her awkward home life, Lynn and I became closer than just player and coach. Just before the state championship game, I pulled her aside for a quick talk.
