I had lived on a farm most of my life, and being the only child I felt obligated to move back home, when my mom passed away. She was only 50 years old when she died, on that cold dreary day in February, and my dad was approaching 60 quick. I didn't think my dad would be able to handle all the duties of running the farm, nor did I think he would have enough money to hire a few farm-hands to keep things going. So, I took on most of the chores, and taking care of the fields. While my dad concentrated on taking care of feeding the animals, and showing me how to do the book work, and how to keep the farm financially sound.

We never discussed his/their personal bank account. He was a private man, when it came to his own financial matters, but he did let me know he had enough life insurance to pay off the farm, in the event of his death. I never questioned him on the amount, and trusted him to know what he was talking about. The following winter, he passed away due to double pneumonia.

It was shocking to find out that my parents had saved over $100,000.00 over the years, and that the Life Insurance was worth half a million dollars. What my dad never told me was that he had actually paid off the farm, when my mom passed away. He kept the mortgage on the books, but was making deposits to the savings account, instead of paying the mortgage. He had more than doubled the savings he kept stashed in a safe deposit box, during the year between their deaths. I found a letter in the safe deposit box along with the money he had been saving, ...
