I couldn't wait to enlist when I graduated high school in the spring of 1942. Pearl Harbor had been attacked half a year earlier, and we were very much at war. Sure, I was a bit naïve. Certainly the newspapers made it seem as if the war would soon go in our favor. And the guys in line with me at the induction center were all so very confident that the war could be easily won. My biggest fear was that the Nazis and Japs would surrender before I could get into the war and get my chance to make them pay for forcing us into this conflict. I had much to learn, but that would come with time.

Uh yeah, I had so much to learn. Marine boot camp was an important lesson. I used to think my Mom was harsh, but she had nothing on the drill sergeant. I kept my mouth shut, worked as hard as I could, and didn't join in on the bitch sessions that some of the jerks in our recruit class enjoyed when they thought no one was listening.

When all was said and done, I was named first in my recruit class. But that was after the puking, the rain, the mud, the bugs, and that sprained ankle. And when two guys drowned in the swamp, that set all of us back. This was for real all of a sudden. But then war is very real, so I guess there was a point to all that.
