The Fence It was a typically beautiful sunny day in Santa Barbara. The sun shined warmly, but not so hot that you would be sweating to be out in it. "This is what paradise is like," thought Jerry as he surveyed the yard that was to be his home for the next two months. He had recently graduated from college and had completed his work as a student teacher. While working at one of the local schools, he had met a couple who were both educators and traveled during the summer so they needed a house sitter to tend to all of their plants and their animals. He not only had a great place to live to the next two months, he also had the use of their sports car to drive and keep the battery from dying. The house was tucked back in at the edge of a hillside with no one behind him and only one house alongside. The large corner lot had a variety of fruit trees with peaches, plums, cherries all plentiful and ready to pick. Strawberry beds and artichokes also lined one side of the tree area. On the other end of the property was a tall fence that was covered in jasmine plants, providing not only a shelter but also a tropical smell that carried throughout the yard. A simple strip of lawn provided a nice break between the house and the back fence, which separated him from the neighbors. There were a few rose bushes to break up the fence line, but it was mostly visible from the back sliding glass door and patio area.

Jerry had walked around and looked at all the plants, thinking that this was a pretty good setup for him. He worked at a local restaurant to help pay his bills, but otherwise had minimal expenses and a high value ...
